The UK Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) has revealed a warning letter for the medication Viagra, a drug used to treat erectile dysfunction in men.
The MHRA said the warning letter was made to the Health and Human Services in the UK.
“A prescription for Viagra for erectile dysfunction is required. This medication can be used for the treatment of erectile dysfunction if prescribed by a doctor. It is not recommended for use by women or children as it may cause birth defects,” it said.
“The medication should be used as soon as possible after a previous sexual activity, in order to avoid the occurrence of unwanted pregnancy,” it added.
The agency also noted that some men taking Viagra have reported having problems with erections or ejaculation.
The MHRA also issued a warning about “unusually high blood pressure” and dizziness, which could be linked to the medication.
The agency said it is reviewing whether the medication can be used to treat erectile dysfunction in men.
The UK is one of a number of countries with a high level of health risk for prescription-only medicines. However, there are concerns raised by the MHRA about the safety of some of its drugs.
Viagra has been linked to severe cardiovascular problems in some men and may even lead to death in some cases, it said.
“Viagra should not be used by people with cardiovascular disease. Viagra should not be used by men who have been taking nitrates, because the combination of nitrates and Viagra can lead to a serious and potentially fatal drop in blood pressure,” it added.
Men taking the drug were also advised to avoid alcohol and tobacco use, although the agency warned against using Viagra to prevent heart attacks.
MHRAThe drug was also associated with a possible increased risk of stroke, according to the MHRA.
A spokeswoman for the MHRA said: “We have spoken to a number of health professionals, as part of our ongoing investigation into this issue and their advice.
“This review is ongoing and we are continuing to monitor any potential reactions to this medication.”
The MHRA also advised patients and families to seek advice on the safety of any other products bought as a result of taking Viagra.
The agency also urged consumers to stop taking Viagra if they have taken the medication in the past, or have taken a different medication.
The MHRA said: “When a drug is taken in the past, it can be harmful in certain situations. For example, a single dose of Viagra, or any other medication, can be harmful in those situations.”It warned against using the drug if a patient has had a heart attack or stroke, or is suffering from any serious medical condition, such as a serious allergic reaction.
The drug was also advised to avoid driving or operating machinery until the product has been assessed by a health professional.
In its letter, the MHRA added that Viagra was not recommended for use in pregnancy, and advised women and children to consult their doctor before taking the medication.
The MHRA said: “It is important for patients and healthcare providers to be aware of the potential benefits and risks of taking Viagra for erectile dysfunction and to seek advice from their healthcare provider if they are concerned about this medication and its use.“Viagra is used to treat erectile dysfunction (ED) in men and can cause side effects such as dizziness and low blood pressure. The risk of these side effects is higher in women and children.
“This is particularly true for people who take nitrates for heart problems or have recently had a heart attack, or are taking nitrates for angina (chest pain) or recent heart surgery.”
A spokesman for the MHRA said the company had received a request for review of Viagra.
In April last year, the drug was linked to a higher risk of stroke, particularly in men.
